Game 4 of the Night - Season 140
Previous GotN Prediction: Western New Mexico 17 - Presbyterian 14
Result: Western New Mexico 47 - Presbyterian 20
Intro/comments/match-up: An impressive performance by Western New Mexico as they scored the first 24 points and led 38-6 at the half. Their wishbone attack was extremely effective in the first half with five touchdown passes, of which three were for 49 or more yards. The second half was anti-climatic with WNM kicking three field goals and Presbyterian scoring two touchdowns. It will be interesting to see if WNM can repeat it in week 5 when they face Cheyney.
Normally, the "smart dog" try not to spotlight the same team twice during the out of conference games. There were a couple of other games where both teams were 3-0 and worthy of being chosen. But as akua29 mentioned this game in his post, it is too good to pass up. As a possible final four match-up, we are going out west with Cheyney as they continue their impressive schedule with a game against Humboldt State.
Team: Cheyney
Coach: Waregl72 # of Seasons: 8
Roster Breakdown:
Seniors: 12
Juniors: 9
Sophomores: 14
Freshmen: 15
Offensive Formations: I
Defensive Formations: Nickel
Key Wins: 48-17 over Ferris State
Losses: N/A
Comments: With a perfect 63-0 conference record since taking over as Cheyney's head coach, coach Waregl72 likes to challenge other human coaches for games. After having games scheduled against Ferris State, Humboldt State, and Western New Mexico this season, it looks like the coach is raising the bar next season with scheduled games against Long Island, Bloomsburg, and Valdosta State. If you want to know how good you are BEFORE the playoffs, then this is definitely one way to find out.
Cheyney has an outstanding roster with the seniors and juniors being spread out throughout. Their possible weakness is their depth. If they face a team with many more seniors and juniors, then it could be trouble for them.
Team: Humboldt State
Coach: Jaylien1 # of Seasons: 6
Roster Breakdown:
Seniors: 11
Juniors: 16
Sophomores: 8
Freshmen: 15
Offensive Formations: Pro-set
Defensive Formations: 3-4, Dime
Key Wins: 65-0 over Albany State, 47-28 over Pace
Losses: N/A
Comments: It has been 26 seasons since Humboldt State has celebrated a national championship. Coach Jaylien1 has gotten the university into the semi-finals the last two seasons. This team will be a team that others will have to contend with on their drive for five (wins) to secure the championship. The one weakness that will need to be overcome is the less than average 54% completion rate.
Tonight's Prediction: The winner of this game may just take the top spot of the initial Rockne Top Ten that makes its appearance after tonight's games. After careful (but not necessary accurate) consideration, the "smart dog" is predicting a wild, high scoring game that may even need additional time to finish. When the game is over, Humboldt State will be the survivor as they pulled it out 44-42.
