S135 Playoffs Round 1


Let the playoffs begin!  We kick off season 135 with all human opponents and ZERO Sim-AI teams!

Headlines

  • The Ferris State upset over Northern Michigan 45-24. was huge.  Is Coachoatie back and ready to return to the NC?

  • With FSU beating NMU, is Cheyney the #1 team since they beat Ferris St 40-25 in week 2?

  • Texas A&M-Commerce has a grind of a game verses Tarleton St. 20-5, leaving fans skeptical about their chances of dominating the playoffs. The defense carries the team, where did the offense go?

  • W. Chester lands in arguably the toughest bracket (WEST) that features N. Alabama, Valdosta St. and TAMC.  Some really good teams are going to be out early this year!

  • High hopes this season for W. New Mexico and tmelonhead, who played well against big programs but Linux_Box has their number.  Can they rebound over Pace after a tough 30-7 loss?

  • Who is Kentucky State?  If you missed the entire season, just remember Dukelegend.  5 seasons ago this team was SIM-AI and recently had 2 (10 win) seasons.  They win the CC which has not happened in about 30 seasons, averaging 653 yards and 66 points per game!  How far can he go?  Coach of the year prospect?

As usual, I will try to grab my crystal ball and predict the future.  Some I'll get some hits and some misses but this season, I decided to try a new bracket tool.  I think I saw it on the Wilkinson board a few months back and thought it would be fun to use.

Games to watch for Round 1

Texas A&M-Commerce 14-0 (akua29) vs Shepherd 11-3 (dawgnuts)

  • TAMC has been a favorite all season, but with a 20-5 win over Tarleton St. in the CC, their performance was less than expected.  

  • Shepherd has been playing very well and lost to Midwestern St. and Presbyterian (twice) by a touchdown or less.  

  • 91.5% FG accuracy

  • TAMC has an elite RB and WR behind an all senior offensive line, plus an all senior defensive line.

  • Shepherd is bringing an all senior offensive line, linebacker and defensive back group.  

  • Allows 2.3 PPG on the season.

If Texas comes out on all cylinders then Shepherd will slowly lose ground and the game will be out of touch by the 4th quarter.  After a sluggish performance on offense, Shepherd could gain the momentum and keep it close.  The key to this game is for Shepherd to hurt TAMC's stubborn defense and try to maintain good field position to put up easy points.  Their FG kicker is lights out right now hitting 91.%% of his attempts with a long of 50.

Verdict: Texas A&M-Commerce comes out slow but regains their tempo in the second half and wins 27-20.

Humboldt St. 13-1 (jaylien1) vs Long Island 12-1 (bigpoppa85)

  • Humboldt St. won 44-3 over Long Island in exhibition (meaningless) and did on the ground.

  •  Heavy JR/SR offensive and defensive line but thinner at linebacker and defensive back running a 3-4 

  • Long Island lacks some in talent but averages nearly 70 points a game behind a high powered passing attack.

  • 90% Field Goal .pct

  • Has thrown 7 interceptions on the season.

Jaylien1 has a very winnable game if he can stop the passing attack.  His team can run the ball and also put up 40+ points.  They have been very effective versus the pass but could miss a couple key field goals based on the year performance.  Bigpoppa85 is making the most out of his team and apparently has a clutch kicker which will be needed.  QB McCarty could change the tempo if he is not able to control throwing interceptioins.  They are averaging 125 yards rushing allowed per game and could allow Humboldt St. to play keep away.  

Verdict: Long Island air attack comes threw in a close win 33-31.
